I am looking at tramways used in coastal defence sites and wondering what the preferred gauge was and why. In NZ the submarine mining bases seem to favour 18 inch while the forts typically employ 2ft gauge tramways. Was wondering if there is any pattern for British and colonial military tramways in coastal defence sites. I understand that the Royal Arsenal had an internal 18 inch gauge rail network and suspect this was imposed on some coastal defence kitsets exported to the colonies. From little I know of US forts various gauges were used incl 2ft 6 inch. Am interested in any info on rail gauges for coastal defence sites in US or elswhere.
