After emailing the Boston Public Health Commission I got permission to go out to Long Island, Quincy / Boston, MA

I sort of limited myself by putting in the comment field "Fort Strong" only.
I think If I get the chance again I will ask permission to cheque out the hospital and chapel etc.

So I get to the gate give the guy my "permission slip" and we are off and running.

We get to the very end of the island and a marked cruiser pulls up behind us after he was "hiding" in the woods.

so after getting "Pulled Over" by the Boston Public Health Commission Police. The officer in the car rolls down his window. I wave and he said "what's going on?" I said oh just here to photograph the fort. He says "absolutely not" I laughed and said oh I am sorry I have permission I gave the guard the form. He doesn't say a word and drives away. HA HA oh and it was a "2 man car" interesting.

So we set off to photograph Fort Strong. Here are my best shots from the day.

All in all a great day.
But yeah you have to get permission before heading out here.
Email the Boston Public Health Commission for permission.

Great pictures! What's the writing on the top of the battery? It almost looks like its says "Kennedy". Do you know this history of that, or is it just garden variety graffiti?

I had to laugh at the thing with the cops... Why would you not be able to take pictures of a 100+ year old military structure? Was he worried about it's tactical relevance?! Or was he just being a dork?

There is an old asylum on the island, as well as a school / camp for troubled teens - that is where the extra scrutiny come in...

The painting does say KENNEDY - if you fly into Logan Airport you can see it on your final approach. I haven't been on Fort Strong since the mid-70s when there was no attended guard shack and the old Hospital was still open.

There is a great searchlight tunnel installation on the channel side of the Fort. We used to rent boats in Hull and then visit all the islands - what an adventure. Do you have any more pictures of the other island installations?

As I remember, there is a NIKE base on the road to Ft Strong that has been repurposed as a school. :D

Great photos. Thanks.

Ah, I see. I guess those cops have to shoo out their fair share of Urban Explorer types.

Whats the purpose of the panting? A political message or something along those lines?
