Hi All - this is the first scan from the Matthew Edwards postcard collection. As you can see the caption is "Largest Gun in the World, Fort Wright, Fisher's Island, NY". So my question is "What is it?" Since it doesn't seem to be in a concrete emplacement, is it the dynamite gun? Also, the gun tube for JMK Davis came to mind, perhaps prior to it being emplaced at Fort Michie. The card is postmarked 1933, and wasn't mailed from the island, nor does it seem to be from personnel stationed at the post.

At first glance, I thought it was the 16-inch disappearing gun at Fort Michie on Greater Gull Island. But then I read the caption and saw it said "Fort Wright!" Back in the 1920s, the Army proposed to put a battery of twin 16-inch guns at Fort Wright and Fort Terry to complement Battery JMK Davis, but I don't think Congress approved the funds.

Maybe some enterprising businessman printed up the postcards in anticipation of the proposed construction and you found one of the remnants. Or maybe he realized that there were a heck of a lot more soldiers posted on Fishers Island than Greater Gull Island who wanted to write home!

According to BW this is the M1895 16" for Panama. It sat around for about a decade at Sandy Hook before being shipped off. BW says it was common for soldiers to pose with the gun. It is either a stock card reprinted by J. Solomon of New London - or perhaps a soldier brought a picture with him to Ft Wright and the local publisher just assumed the gun was there.

This is a picture of the gun BW mentioned. Its from the book "The World's Work... A History of Our Time", published by Doubleday, Page, & Co. of New York in 1908. The document was digitized by books.google.com and is in the public domain
