HARBOR DEFENSE PHOTO  COLLECTION  OFFER

Recently a “new” source of aerial photographs of American coast artillery posts has been located at the National Archives within Record Group 342. Most date from the 1920s to 1930s and were shots taken during Air Corps observation squadron training flights of both existing and former forts, including a good number featuring coastal and Great Lakes fortifications. These photos have had little publication use in recent years. 145 photos have been selected for this offer.

Do note that not all harbors and forts are represented. The collection is what it is, and was never meant to be a survey of every post. While most harbors are represented, some are not. Likewise some forts are not well covered; in some cases (like Fort Hancock), all the existing photos were taken at such an altitude that little battery detail can be made out. The best coverage is for Portland, Boston, Newport, New York, Panama, Hawaii, and the Philippines.

These are photocopies of 8x10 prints—not actual photos or digital prints. However they are on a high-quality, coated paper, printed single-sided, and have been professionally copied. Still, these are photocopies of 8x10 prints!

Price, including pre-paid media-mail postage (3-4 weeks to deliver) is $25.00 per copy ($28.00 for priority mal). International orders please add for additional postage. Order from (with check or money order made out to Glen Williford) Glen Williford, 634 Silver Dawn Ct., Zionsville, IN 46077.
